Assessment Topics»

When you attend your first Challenger Sports Interview and Assessment day, we will provide you with details of the various coaching opportunties that Challenger Sports can offer and we will give you a clear picture of what is expected from all of our staff in the US.

We will also use this time to began evaluating which of the age groups and levels of players your personality and coaching style would be best suited for. You will be asked to set up and run a short example of a coaching session for us. As the majority of our campers are between the ages of 7 and 12 we recommend that you create your coaching plan as if you were coaching 12 players of average ability aged 12 years old.

We would like to see you set up a basic unopposed technical practice and gradually add elements of pressure & opposition and finally finish in a game related activity. You will only be required to coach for 10-15 minutes and we will be looking for you to demonstrate the following:

  • Set up of the appropriate coaching area
  • Communication of clear instructions to the group
  • Stepping in and coaching an individual within the group
  • Gradually adding pressure
  • Enthusiasm and good use of voice
  • Progression of your practice from unopposed, to opposed, to game related
  • Please read the section on "Coaching the Challenger Way" to get more information on how we expect your session to progress.

Here is a blank coaching plan for you to use to plan out your session. Please make an additional copy and hand to the Challenger Senior staff member conducting the assesment.

You will be given one of the following topics to coach.

  • Close dribbling & Turning
  • Running with the ball
  • Shooting
  • Heading
  • Short Passing
  • Long Passing
  • Control on the ground
  • Control in the air
  • Volleying
  • The scissors move
